Macrovisões - An exhibition of artists’ works on microbiology
Building on Wheeler’s research into the cross-disciplinary possibilities between science and art, she was invited to curate an exhibition ‘MACROVISÕES’ which explored molecular biology through the eyes of contemporary artists and designers. The exhibition investigated ways in which a dialogue between artists and molecular biology could be exhibited in order to engage the public in the conversation. Inspired by the scientific achievements of Max Perutz, one of the founding fathers of Molecular Biology, Wheeler also developed a series of drawings that explored Perutz comments about the “rock and roll” molecule, describing the dynamic movements of haemoglobin.
MACROVISÕES was held in 17 September - 28 November 2009, as part of the ‘Nomadic 09.10’ a year-long research project initiated by the University of Porto. Wheeler gave a paper, ‘Tracing the Invisible’ which discussed the themes within the exhibition on 28 November 2009 at the University of Porto.
