The book is an original 213-page manuscript based on primary data collected during a three-year Danish Research Academy doctoral scholarship. The data was collected during 17 months of full-time ethnographic fieldwork, comprising participant observation, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and life-story interviews, complemented with shorter follow-up visits. Fieldwork was carried out in Spain, Cuba and the US. The five main ethnographic chapters could each have been published as separate journal articles.
