The work presented in this paper grew out of a study presented in 2009 at an important Brazilian conference in business studies (ENANPAD) and selected as amongst the best papers of this conference (ID_in_audit_file@anpad.org.br). Building on the analytical framework for international comparisons developed in this work, an international cooperation project between Cambridge and Abreu has recently been approved ‘Industrial Symbiosis and stakeholder interaction in the industrial network at Pecém Region’, funded by the Brazilian government through Ceara State Agency (FUNCAP) Grant ref. no. CI1-0080-00016.01.00/13.
