Positively Picturing Pain? Using Patient-generated Pictures to Establish Affective Visual Design Qualities
This paper reports on an innovative approach to using patient-generated pictures to form a basis for design guidelines with respect to affective design. By systematically examining and categorising over 60 patient-generated pictures, this paper presents ways in which these visual characteristics can be 'reversed'. Positive affective design is a burgeoning area in product design though is severely under-researched in graphic design and in healthcare. Elements of this paper were presented at an IIID conference at the National Institute of Design in India and research presented here helped inform the development of a design tool currently in use by the NHS.
