Double-weighted statement

The Smoke of the Soul is the result of fourteen years of work. It is around 170,000 words in length. Research for the project began in 1999, whilst writing began in 2006. Research was conducted across a wide range of primary sources at the British and Wellcome libraries and via relevant databases. The research process was especially complex in that the book tracks the largely forgotten history of the embodied soul across drama, poetry, religious polemic and sermons, and early-modern medical and scientific texts.
