Additional information

Store operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) was recently identified in rodent skeletal muscle and subsequent studies led to the suggestion that SOCE maintains contractile force during intensive exercise, particularly in aged muscle. However, SOCE had not been demonstrated in human muscle nor had its possible role in muscle pathology been investigated. Here we used human muscle biopsy samples to demonstrate (i) that the SOCE pathway is present in human muscle (ii) that the inherited disease ‘malignant hyperthermia’ leads to activation of this pathway and exacerbation of the condition. This work lead to an award from the European MH Group to 1st Author.
