Additional information

Very little research has employed biomechanics to study load carrying conditions in history. Our study was the first to explore how wearing armour affected Medieval soldier's physical performance. We predict age-associated decline in Medieval soldiers’ physical performance, and have potential implications for understanding the outcome of Medieval military battles. Our findings were of broad interest and the paper was highlighted in the media across six continents including: TV (ITN News, ITV Calendar News, BBC Breakfast News, BBC World TV), radio (BBC radio 4 Today Programme, BBC radio Scotland, CBC News, BBC World Service Radio), national newspapers (Times, Daily Telegraph, Guardian), online (ScienceNOW, BBC News, History.com).
