That Blessed Wood (Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra)
This is an example of an original composition sharing new insights into the concerto form and the expressive potential of the bassoon. It was commissioned from the researcher by the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, for performance by their pre-professional chamber orchestra, Camerata Scotland, and the principal bassoonist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, David Hubbard; it was first performed on 16 April 2011 at Perth Concert Hall.
Boyle has co-authored, with Hubbard and others, an account of the compositional process and the premiere performances for Double Reed News (Issue 96, Autumn 2011, 30-32). This article is included in the portfolio that accompanies this output, to provide further information on the research process.
