This paper describes a new design for environmental control systems which permits severely disabled individuals considerable autonomy. A new technique is described which allows severely disabled individuals to directly control devices in their environment simply by looking at them.

The paper is the result of an international collaboration between Loughborough University and Politecnico di Torino, Italy which resulted from the EU COGAIN Network of Excellence IST programme. The work details how research carried out at Loughborough, funded by the DTI PACCIT programme and the EPSRC, can be encompassed within a wider domotic (automated home) environmental control system specifically for severely disabled users. The joint work led on to further international collaborations additionally with the University of Tampere, Finland which resulted in further joint publications.
