Self-Portrait as Ruth

The research basis of this creative writing output included two trips to Israel and the West Bank, where I travelled widely, observing events, places and people, and talked with members of the public and representatives of organisations such as UNRWA and Zochrot. I corresponded with peace organisations in the UK, such as War on Want and JfJfP, and observed peace events. This research, combined with oral history collection from friends and family members, and in-depths reading in Israel-Palestine history, and in Israeli, Palestinian and British newspaper coverage, blogs, online journals, and archives, all informed the writing of these poems, whether directly, as in the poem ‘Storytelling’ (p. 43), or as landscape and background, as in ‘Gaza, summer 2006’ (p.14).
