Leachate recirculation in a landfill: some insights obtained from the development of a simple 1-D model
Significance of output:
Recovery of methane gas from landfills is a major source of renewable energy with over 5 TWh of electricity being produced in the UK in 2012. Landfill operators are increasingly seeking to optimise landfill gas generation by recirculating leachate through landfilled waste, but have little theoretical basis for the recirculation design. This paper develops a simple to use analytical model for evaluating the basic design parameters of a leachate recirculation system, including the correct sizing of treatment systems. The work contributes to research on leachate recirculation funded by the Environment Agency.
