This paper was published in the peer-reviewed journal Personal and Ubiquitous Computing 15 (1) and presents an emergence-driven research methodology for the design and understanding of behaviour within locative and other pervasive games. A number of examples of trials of installations created and analysed by the authors in collaboration with artists, educationalists and broadcasters are described from which the conclusions are draw. We have publlished these individually before the sensus period and discussed the technical implications in IEEE Multimedia14 (3) - Stenton et al (2007) * http://www.computer.org/csdl/mags/mu/2007/03/u3098-abs.html

To carry out this work we built a toolkit called mscapes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mscape which was made accessible to a community of artists, educationalists, broadcasters and members of community groups around the world. Over 300 applications were built of which some were trials that helped us develop our methodology. http://tatehandheldconference.pbworks.com/w/page/19520853/Escape%20from%20the%20Tower

This paper represents the lessons we learned during our experiments in the period between1997 and 2008. Our contribution was to open up the exploration of this new digital-physical medium by a broader cross sector community and to combine research and practice to inform the development of both pervasive media design knowledge and a community of producers and performers exploring digitally augmented site-specific experiences. http://www.terirueb.net/core_sample/

As the research director I was responsible for co-design and analysis of the trials and co-development of the emerging knowledge and platform. I also co-produced the series of international conferences ‘mscapeFest’ from 2007-2009 http://www.northernireland.gov.uk/news-dfp-021208-finance-minister-opens http://www.themobilecity.nl/2009/10/30/cfp-mscapefest09-in-tilburg-the-netherlands-25-26-nov/
