Paper is first report of direct laser-writing techniques for creating photonic circuitry compatible with applications in quantum photonics. Previously, expensive lithographic techniques were considered only method of fabrication. Paper was critical part of justification for including quantum information processing programme in successful Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence bid for Centre for Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS, CE110001018, AU$23.8M, 2010-7). Paper also motivated Marshall's successful Marie Curie Fellowship application (€270k, 2012) resulting in his move to University of Bristol.
