Additional information

Paper is first to experimentally demonstrate gridless optical networking with geographically-scattered flexible spectrum switching nodes over British Telecom's and Janet's Aurora dark fibre network. Network is able to switch and transport mix line rate technologies ranging from 10 to 555 Gb/s and beyond. It counters issue of spectral defragmentation by applying wavelength conversion where and when needed. Work jointly funded by European "STRONGEST" project (No. 247674, €7.4M, 2010-2) and EPSRC (EP/I01196X/1, £7.3M, 2010-6). It was exploited by project partner British Telecom [contact: Head of Core Optics Research] and fundamental in award of European grant "IDEALIST" (No. 317999, €8M, 2012-5).
