Hybrid Model Reference Adaptive Control of Piecewise Affine Systems
Many engineering systems (e.g. vibro-impacting machines, power-electronic devices) are governed
by differential equations with switches and discontinuities. Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC)
is successfully used in many applications but extension to systems described by switched and hybrid
models remains open problem. Paper presents generic MRAC framework for piecewise-smooth
continuous systems, including rigorous proof-of-convergence based on recent extensions of passivity
theory to switched systems. Co-author Montarano is with Instituto Motori of Italian National Research
Council where control strategy is being applied experimentally on prototype electromechanical throttle
valves in collaboration with various automotive companies including Bosch and Magneti Marelli.
