Additional information

Paper describes new instability of pressure release valve under low-flow conditions and resulted from international collaboration. Grazing bifurcation analysis (an inherently non-smooth process) is augmented by dedicated analysis of chatter which points to a novel chaotic attractor. When published online in May 2011, work was picked up by world's leading supplier of such valves [contact: Global Engineering Manager, Tyco Valves (now Pentair), Texas]. This led to consultancy with Pentair that uncovered complete characterisation of valve instability and led to patent application for new valve.
