Additional information

Zirconium alloys used in nuclear reactors are susceptible to hydride formation and cracking. Determining influence of hydrides on cracking is challenging due to difficulty in measuring and accounting for stress in both phases. Paper shows that by using high-resolution high-energy synchrotron diffraction it is possible to probe strains around a crack tip in both zirconium matrix and hydrides within it. Low fraction and high texture of hydrides required use of novel parametric analysis technique and this was first demonstration of utility of this technique for strain measurements.
