Additional information

Mode-locking is technique used to generate ultra-short pulses of light for applications in communications, sensing and optical instrumentation. Paper presents mode-locked quantum-dot semiconductor lasers to generate ultra-short pulses of light, and is considered seminal paper in field. Work conclusively demonstrates, for first time, that quantum-dot lasers are able to fulfil broad range of practical requirements for optical-pulse generation. Following this paper University of New Mexico, University of Berlin and Cork Institute of Technology all published practical work on quantum-dot lasers. Paper is in top 0.1% of most-cited in journal within REF period (Web of Science, 14/7/2013).
