High-specific output bidirectional moving magnet actuator for use in active vibration control of rotorcraft
Invited paper investigates high-bandwidth embedded actuation for active control of helicopter rotor blades, giving lower vibration, lower noise, better comfort and better fuel economy. Paper demonstrates that novel electromagnetic actuators could have comparable performance plus other benefits compared to current piezoceramic solutions. Work was subsequently topic of invited presentation by Mellor to IET colloquium. Work led to European Clean Sky funding (No. 278393, €371k, 2011-5) on electromagnetic actuators for rotor blades and collaboration on electromagnetic actuators for active rotor blades with AgustaWestland [contact: Principal Engineer]. Paper is identified as research group highlight in REF5.
