Additional information

Peer-to-peer wireless networks (direct communication between handsets without supporting infrastructure) are proposed for beyond-4G communications; however they are vulnerable to radio shadowing. Paper was one of first to consider this problem; it proposes new model and rigorous ray-tracing applied to fit best parameters for 2 GHz (cellular) and 5 GHz (wireless LAN) operation. Prior to paper, most system-level simulators assumed uncorrelated shadowing and were inaccurate. Work was exploited by consortium members [contact: Prod. Vidal, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya] in European project "ROMANTIK" (No. 32549, €2.1M, 2002-4) and led to projects with DSTL on peer-to-peer communications [contact: Project Technical Lead].
