Additional information

Ice pigging (cleaning pipes or ducts using crushed ice slurry) is paradigm-shifting method for cleaning water-supply pipes to deal with long-standing problem of water discolouration. Paper describes results of application to in situ water trunk mains. Technology has been licensed to Suez, who practice and sub-license technique worldwide, and who have (as of Sept 2012) 40 people directly employed on ice pigging tasks. Work won 2010 International Water Association Project Innovation Award [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-63] and 2009 UK Water Industry Achievement Award for the Most Innovative Technology [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-64]. Work has been widely reported in trade articles, e.g. The Engineer [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-65].
