Double-weighted statement

This 106,000-word monograph was based on a research investment of extended scale and scope, amounting to more than that of two single outputs. Begun in 1999 and funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and AHRC, the research entailed advanced German-language training, extensive primary and secondary historical research, participation-observation fieldwork (including training as a tour guide) and over seventy interviews, all conducted by the author. Chapter 7 (of 9) is a lightly revised version of an article published in 2006.
