Additional information

Three calligraphic works by Clayton, which aim to find two different ways of getting space into calligraphic work using purely calligraphic means – the line and gesture.

One of the pieces was a sixteen page handwritten book (a text on Japanese gardening) which, along with the second piece, explored the use of the writing line. A third work was written with the quill pen but then, using the tone that sumi can produce when smeared or printed off, Clayton intervened into the wet ink with the palms and fingers of both of hands as he wrote to suggest movement and space within and around the word.

The exhibition of this work La Poetica Dello Spazio Scritto -The Poetics of Written Space, at The Museo Correr (part of the Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia) (2 October – 31 October 2010), addressed the place of calligraphy between the visual arts and writing. It comprised three sections spread across five rooms. Drawing on Venetian archives, the exhibition presented a short history of writing in Europe including the first printed writing manuals. There was also an interactive installation and 18 artists from across the world were invited to contribute. Clayton was the representative from Great Britain.
