This article presents a thorough evaluation of 3D fusion echocardiography, a technique pioneered and taken from lab prototype to clinical evaluation and commercialisation by a university spin-out Intelligent Ultrasound. This paper presents evaluations on phantom and clinical datasets. Importantly it demonstrates quantitative added-value in terms of field-of-view and image quality. Prof. Noble’s group has developed variants of 3D fusion echocardiography over a number of years with clinical collaborators (incl. IEEE Trans. Med Imag 26(9) 2007, Ultrasound Med. Biol 37(7) 2011, Med. Imag. Anal (15)4 2011) publishing technology evaluation at leading international clinical meetings (EuroEcho, American Soc. Echo meeting) and obstetrics.
