Hadland contributed approximately 90% of the text of the book and carried out all the research. The research consisted of three elements: in-depth interviews with the subject (Kader Asmal), interviews with friends and associates, then going through Minister Asmal's papers and speeches (500 as Education Minister alone). From this material, Hadland wrote a 1,000 page draft manuscript which was then edited by Minister Asmal (light edit as he was gravely ill) and a few anecdotal elements were added by the third researcher. Minister Asmal died before the book was published.
