Additional information

This paper represents the first step towards translating the studies we have conducted on mapping and characterizing brain iron associated with Alzheimer’s into an MRI diagnostic technique. In collaboration with the US National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, we present the first composite images of synchrotron x-ray mapped iron distribution and R2 MR images. We demonstrate a positive correlation between R2, R2* and iron biomineralization in AD tissue and show differences in the R2/R2* MR images between controls and AD in the Cornu Ammonis and dentate gyrus. This work was funded by NIH (5R01AG021030 & 1R21NS060304) and MRC (G0001009).
