Additional information

The response of composites under compression requires relationships between damage and material properties and is a current problem that is carefully studied by Soutis and co-workers. In this paper, plastic fibre microbuckling is recognized to be the dominant failure mechanism in a relatively new carbon fibre/toughened epoxy composites; a model is developed that captures the non-linear shear response of the resin and its role in the initiation and growth of the fibre instability. The work assisted the sponsors (Vice President, Research and Technology at Cytec Engineering Materials) to improve resin systems with improved compressive and impact resistance.
