Molecular profiling of single cells in response to mechanical force: comparison of chondrocytes, chondrons and encapsulated chondrocytes.
This paper demonstrates new techniques to define the role of the cell-associated matrix surrounding a chondrocyte. It shows that chondrons are better suited for tissue engineering than chondrocytes. This work played an important role in the development of a new cell-based regenerative treatment for focal articular cartilage defects. This new treatment uses chondrons instead of isolated chondrocytes and can be performed as a single-stage procedure (email Daniel Saris d.saris@umcutrecht.nl). This output was a key deliverable from EPSRC funding (EP/C511735/1) on which Kuiper was a Co-Investigator. It formed part of the successfully defended PhD thesis of Qi Guang Wang.
