Additional information

This work demonstrated the amenability of astrocytes (a key neural cell with major homeostatic functions in the nervous system) to labelling with magnetic particles, proven for the first time in primary astrocytes (of higher clinical relevance than the cells lines widely employed in nanotechnology research). The study elucidates the cellular mechanisms used for nanoparticle uptake, and demonstrates a novel application of organotypic 3D neural slices to function as ‘host’ tissue for labelled transplant populations, an approach with high potential for Reduction and Refinement of animal experimentation in transplantation studies.
