Constructing Adolescence in Fantastic Realism
The first dedicated study of this subgenre of adolescence required:
• Locating and collating more than 100 young adult novels from 1967-2007, using library catalogues, printed bibliographies and long runs of children’s book review journals (e.g. Books for Keeps 1980-2007)
• Extensive research in local libraries and Bodleian archives.
• Amassing comprehensive bibliographic data to identify young adult writing drawn from author profiles, backlists from young adult imprints, publishers’/booksellers’ marketing strategies
• Mapping complex models of adolescence through extensive analysis of a wide range of sociological and psychological literature, and media and cultural sources, including newspaper reports and television documentaries on ‘youth’
