This article, published in a collection surveying the field of International History, discusses how historians have used the concept of ‘globalisation’ since discovering the term in the late 1990s, proposes a periodisation of globalisation in modern history and calls for the development of three fields of study: non-Western contributions to processes of globalisation; the 1970s as a key period in the history of globalisation; and globalisation in labour history.
