This output addresses the research question of how aspects of visual perception theory and aspects of communication theory might be amalgamated in pedagogical strategies in order to empower students’ practice. Specifically, the article proposes a strategy for the teaching of drawing within an art school context which makes use of aspects of J.J. Gibson’s ecological approach to visual perception, and Roman Jakobson’s notion of the ‘poetic function’ in communication theory. The article is illustrated with examples from the author’s practice, and examples of student work.
