Additional information

As machines and converters become more efficient, it becomes increasingly difficult to measure the total power loss and efficiency improvements. One important method of measuring losses is calorimetry. This paper describes a novel calorimeter for testing medium electrical machines. Its novelty lies in the accurate measurement of the coolant’s thermal properties, prevention of heat leakage, maintenance of steady and repeatable testing conditions, and the design of inlet/outlet ducts and active temperature control. It has improved from two previous designs at Nottingham and provides the highest accuracy of its kind in the world. It led to an EPSRC grant (EP/K008552 £367,225).
