Pessoa's Geometry of the Abyss: Modernity and The Book of Disquiet
This first book-length study of Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet focuses on a comparative discussion of Pessoa's textual strategies in relation to key aspects of Modernity such as the construction of the Self and identity, politics, photography and cinema. Given the complexity of a large fragmentary text widely regarded as a masterpiece of world literature, the argument proposes protocols of reading linking the text to philosophical questions posed by Friedrich Schlegel, Jacques Derrida and Alain Badiou, setting the discussion of Pessoa in a theoretical framework and in dialogue with key writers such as Walter Benjamin and Franz Kafka.
