Additional information

This paper was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Thatcher Bros Prize 2008/09 for the best journal paper in manufacturing. The research reported here has been further developed into a 'snag-manager' tool that is being used within the wing manufacturing facility of Airbus UK to automate the inspection process and generate fault reports. This tool has led to an order of magnitude reduction in the inspection lead-time of wing sets (Simon Astwood, simon.astwood@eads.com).
