Additional information

TNT equivalency underpins all explosive safety legislation but assumes a spherical charge, despite military charges being cylindrically shaped. This research developed for the first time a simple method of predicting the blast from cylindrical charges. This and associated work has resulted in sponsorship for follow-on research projects projects from AWE (Ruth.Cheesman@awe.co.uk), MOD-DOSG (Phil Pitcher, MOD - DESNAG-Exp4@mod.uk) and Wallop Defence Systems Ltd (Les.Gibbons@wallopdefence.com) and a separate contract from AWE to determine the TNT equivalency of non-spherical charges of High Explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics. The results are used to assess the risks of storage and transport of explosives (Ruth.Cheesman@awe.co.uk).
