This paper was one of 4 chosen at the Emerald Group Awards for Excellence, across all papers submitted to this journal in 2011. The research formed part of an EPSRC IMRC-funded, interdisciplinary project on Servitization. It examined ways for traditional product manufacturing companies to change their business model to sell the more profitable services; this informed related collaborative work with EADS Astrium. Astrium funded a research project on Servitization and Product-Service Systems in the space sector, and contributed to a further project investigating the design of Product-Service Systems.
