This research was an EPSRC funded collaboration between Cranfield University, Newcastle University, Surrey University and Imperial College (grants refs EP/FO26633(CU), EP/FO2658X, EP/FO27524 & EP/FO35764) and included partners DSTL, the University of Science and Technology at Hefei, China (UST) and Sun Yat-Sen University, China. Prior to this, solid polymer fuel cells were based around proton exchange membranes whose cost is a major inhibitor to commercialisation. This project investigated the possibility of developing an alkaline equivalent, offering a number of significant advantages, including faster cell reactions, cheaper catalysts, non-fluorinated ionomers and more favourable water transport.
