Additional information

This research was funded by EPSRC in collaboration with Biffa Group Ltd. The CFD modelling results and methodology contributed to development of better thermal conversion processes for production of high value fuel and chemical products from industrial waste streams (Contact Chris.Parry@biffa.co.uk). The first author received the UK Scopus Young Researcher Engineering Award (2011). Furthermore, the computational models led to an EPSRC grant (EP/G034281 £426,844): Scale-up modelling to address the"Pyrolysis Challenge". South Africa has the largest production of coal to transport fuel facilities in the world, with potential to be the major biofuel producer. Contact at University of Stellenbosch: jgorgens@sun.ac.za.
