Author contribution:

This is a landmark volume of 17 essays, the first to explore the meanings associated with Jewish journeys from antiquity to the twenty-first century. Kushner’s role was editing part IV (5 essays). He also wrote sections of the Introduction (pp.1-7, 17-23). His own archivally-based chapter is the first treatment of the subject. It shows how Jews on board were included amongst the rich and famous travelling first class for pleasure, but also those travelling steerage and second class who were migrants, transmigrants and step migrants of the huge Jewish population movement in the early twentieth century.
