Double-weighted statement

The Work of Revision analyses the history of composition and rewriting in the age of the typewriter, from Henry James dictating to an amanuensis to Allen Ginsberg typing directly on to the machine. The book’s major focus is on extreme, structural revision as a marker of high modernism. Individual chapters draw on seven years of new research at archives in the UK and US (Houghton, Berg, Hemingway Library). It also makes a significant theoretical intervention in textual studies: it offers a typology of revision in general; and it interrogates the schism between Anglo-American intentionalist editing and continental genetic criticism.
