Extensive work on the diction of the poems repositioned them in date, mode and provenance. Using computer-generated corpora and the MED, the tracing of common patterns of vocabulary and figurative expression revealed a poetic temper enmeshed in several contingent political and ecclesiastical fields. This work on diction and style was compared with parliamentary records, heterodox writing, dissident tracts and devotional writing. The dialect and stanza forms revealed the creation of a distinctive, poetic texture. The final body of evidence suggests that the poems were written as part of a response to Henry V’s reform of the institutional church.
