Double-weighted statement

This 110,000-word book is based on research in UK and US libraries and archives, supported by the AHRC, and fellowships at NMM and Clark Libraries, UCLA, in 2008. Extensive and varied primary sources were consulted in international specialist collections, evidenced in the bibliography of approximately 100 primary sources and 250 secondary sources. The book analyses a wide variety of documents, and literary texts, some of considerable length, and intertextually related to classical material, in changing editions, over 50 years. Archive work to discover the hitherto unwritten history of particular pirates itself demanded several years' work at the National Archives.
