Double-weighted statement

This eight-chapter, 115,000-word monograph results from the collection and analysis of a considerable and wide-ranging body of material in multiple languages, medieval and modern. As well as drawing on over 90 published literary, historiographical, geographical, documentary and cartographic primary sources across four chapters, a two-chapter section of the book is founded almost wholly on extensive work with unpublished manuscripts. Over 100 manuscripts were consulted in the course of research, held in research libraries in Britain, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Germany. The final stages of work were supported by an AHRC Early Career Fellowship.
