Double-weighted statement

This 100,000-word book is based on extensive research in UK and US libraries and archives, supported by the British Academy and the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and fellowships at McMaster, the Huntington and Clark Libraries, between 1998 and 2004. The book is wide in scope and analyses a wide variety of texts, looking at the practice of education for the poor and the new political economy, on polite education and its implications for gender and nationalism, on Sparta as the image of a society Britain might emulate if it was to survive, and on female educationalists of the 1790s.
