Significance of output:

This paper sets the agenda for a new research direction in metamaterials, namely coherent metamaterials, experimentally demonstrating the existence of a truly collective response in artificially engineered media spanning from microwave to optical frequencies. Our discovery has identified coherent metamaterials as a platform for developing novel narrow-divergence sources of spatially and temporally coherent radiation, and inspired further studies by metamaterial groups at Los Alamos (Weili Zhang), Universities of Jena (Carsten Rockstuhl) and Strathclyde (Alan Phelps) and others, which are now reflected in over 20 publications. Our work has also established strong collaborative links with University of Freiburg (Markus Walther).
