English abstract

This monograph is the first thorough examination of the logical implications and practical consequences of the neopositivist epistemological paradigm dominating German-speaking pre- and protohistoric archaeology since its foundation as an academic discipline in the late 19th century. It demonstrates that ‘the method’ based on these epistemological foundations, which still dominates most of German-speaking archaeology, is logically unsustainable and leads to significant negative effects in archaeological practice. In conclusion, it argues for a new, reflexive approach to archaeology and the development of a scholarly ethic to combat the negative effects of the positivist approach in German-speaking archaeology.
