In her sunporch' and 'Her garden, my lure' (2 poems)
I situate myself as a ‘nature’ poet, and draw on the rich heritage of nature poetry, including Wordsworth, Ted Hughes, and, more recently, Alice Oswald. I am also concerned with the relationship between form and content, and this is where my engagement with Imagism, particularly H.D., can be discerned in what I believe is an original synthesis of what some would consider divergent streams of influence. These two poems represent an extension of my investigation into the relationship between form and content and the tensions between the human and natural world that these elements can sustain. The work is the result of a field-trip to the studio and gardens of Barbara Hepworth, written in situ as a response to the questions about form and space that her work raises. I believe the significance of my work lies in its attempt to document the place of the natural world within the postmodern sensibility, encompassing gendered responses to space and representation, observing the intervention of the artist as sculptor into natural spaces and attempting to translate the effects of these interventions into textual form. The work has since been developed into multi-media performance pieces, which were premiered at the Chorlton International Arts Festival in Manchester, 2011.
