Significance of output:

Fluid flows over rough surfaces - for example the atmospheric flow over the earth's surface or flows in rough-walled pipework - are ubiquitous. But the detailed nature of such flows is contentious, which hampers the development of appropriate prediction tools. This paper reports direct numerical simulations which indicate that not all the classical hypotheses about the flow are valid.
