Additional information

<13> Originality: This is the first time, in the literature, the bat algorithm is used for solving topological optimization problems in engineering with applications in microelectronics.

Rigour: Some microelectronic applications require careful heat management and thus require optimal placement of components. This paper solves the topological placement problem of two different materials with different thermal properties in order to minimize temperature differences.

Significance: This opens up a new area for solving traditionally difficult shape optimization problems using new optimization techniques. It also shows how representing shape for optimization can lead to significant reduction of the number of design variables, therefore increasing computational efficiency.
